Oros Mampofu bids farewell to Gqeberha The Empire as show gets cancelled. It is not a secret anymore that one of Mzansi Magic’s loved and possible most watched television show Gqeberha The Empire is coming to an end.
Gqeberha came in as a replacement to Ferguson films’ The Queen. After two successful seasons the Eastern Cape based soapie has been put on the chopping board.
Actor Oros Mampofu who played the role of Ntando Mxenge has expressed his views concerning to ending of the telenovela which was fast becoming fan favourite.
His departing statement was filled with gratitude and uncertainties. Speaking to tabloid publication, the Daily Sun, Oros said, “it’s always an honour. We have so much respect for the Eastern Cape story, especially for those of us who grew up here.”
“Being Xhosa. It’s a privilege to be part of a narrative that resonates with so many people in the country,” added Mampofu.
He continued to express that at this moment he’s filled with gratitude bit it’s actually an emotional rollercoaster for this amazing project to come to an end.
“At this point, it’s a mix of pride and gratitude,” he said.
“Saying goodbye to a production is never easy, but it’s a necessary aspect of our work. It’s out responsibility to tell the tale, to portray it truthfully and to allow it to fulfil its intended purpose for the audience it affects,” said the young thespian.
Oros who rose to fame after acing his role on Skeem Saam as Jama Kekana has managed to capture the hearts of many young people in his role as Ntando especially those young lads from Eastern Cape.
He shed light on this saying, “this performance appeals to Eastern Cape residents and has it’s roots in Xhosa culture. For people who may have relocated to Johannesburg or another location for work but who still have strong ties to their homeland, it evokes memories.”
It is still unknown when the last episode of the show will air, but speculation has it that it will be early next year in 2025.
Unconfirmed reports also suggest that another IsiXhosa show will be brought in to replace Gqeberha.
